Overview

Music Literacy explores fundamental music theory and aural skill development, essential for any serious music practitioner or pre-tertiary entrant. This short course has a hands-on approach grounded in practical application and assessment. Topics covered include treble and bass clefs, the grand staff, rhythm and meter, scales, triads, chords, melodies, contemporary chord charts, the circle of fifths, dynamics markings and more.

  • Augmented triad and harmonic minor scale

  • Repeat bar lines, first and second time endings 
  • Introduction to four part chords
  • 8th notes and rests
  • Dotted quarter note applications
  • Lydian major and Mixolydian dominant scales
  • 12 tone chromatic scale
  • Whole and half step distances between notes
  • minor 7th and Major 7th four-part chords
  • Tetra chords
  • Compound intervals incl. major 9th and 10th

Short courses are a great way to study a topic of interest without having the long term commitment. A lot of students start with a short course and then move into a full qualification after completing the short course.

How long do I have to finish?

You have a maximum of 6 months to complete your short course. It is possible to finish your course a lot sooner though.
